Puppy Owners:
I
always tell my clients that they need to be as comfortable with the
trainer of their puppy or dog as they are the teacher of their
children. So let me tell you a bit about myself and why you
really should listen to me:

I
very
clearly remember those days.
It
all started with my puppy Charlie, my golden
retriever who "accidentally" got me started in dog training 25 years
ago and ended up giving me a gift that changed my life.
I got Charlie at 8
weeks of age and initially he
was great!
Then about 2 weeks after
we got him, he became "Charlie the Challenge"
Charlie was a holy terror. He pooped and peed everywhere! He chewed up
the dining room rug; he was really bitey and jumped all over my wife
and people who came over.
Nothing seemed to work!
He wore me out. I
eventually got THE ultimatum ------ fix it or the puppy goes. NOT a
good place to
be.
So
I started to do some dog training-OR maybe
I
should say I attempted to do some dog training with Charlie.
Back then there were no dog shows on TV, literally nothing out there
but a few books on dog training and the methods were hard on a dog. I tried, I
failed, I tried again, and I failed. I
couldn't figure out how one small 10 week old puppy could possibly be
so much trouble!
I
kept thinking--------- this can't possibly be this hard!
Sound
familiar?
Then
I had a breakthrough!
Revelation 1: I realized that when I kept my emotional energy out of the
equation when dealing with Charlie, he wasn't so wild and crazy - he
listened!

I learned how to set Charlie up to succeed NOT fail.

I realized that Charlie listened to me much better (had more
respect for me) when I made him "earn" the things that were
important to him.

I learned to "talk" to Charlie in a language he could
understand
.
Revelation 5: I learned that raising and training a puppy is very much
like raising a child. It takes structure, consistency and
patience.
So the light bulbs started coming on over my head!
I started learning to
communicate with
Charlie in a consistent way. I kept my emotional energy OUT of the
equation. My commands and messages to him
never changed, they were always the same. I was the leader,
not
Charlie. I did not need to dominate---I just needed to lead.
Using these messages with only
positive reinforcement---------Charlie
became a GREAT dog!
I knew I was onto
something.
I kept practicing and learning and getting better and better.
Then
friends and family started asking me to train their dogs------ and
pretty soon I quit my corporate banking job
and became a professional dog trainer. Even though
my family and friends thought I was insane!!!! this
is a
decision I've never regretted.
Charlie is gone now, but I have so much to be thankful to
him for, as he truly changed my life with his gift.
I now have 5134 clients and I
have personally trained over 21, 550 dogs

Don't fall victim to these outdated myths about puppy training.
Myth: The
only collar you can use to train your dog is a choke collar.
WRONG: choke collars can
actually harm your dog's neck and throat.
Choke collars do not lessen pulling on a leash.

You need to let
your puppy know who the boss is by dominating him. WRONG: Yes your
puppy needs to view you as the leader, or "puppy parent", but a good

with positive reinforcement. Build on praising for successes not
